The Mayflower was a historic English merchant ship that famously carried 102 English families, known as the Pilgrims, from England to the New World in 1620, establishing the Plymouth Colony in present-day Massachusetts and laying foundations for the United States. The challenging 66-day voyage, captained by Christopher Jones, involved severe storms, cramped conditions, and sickness, but ended with the signing of the Mayflower Compact and the first winter in the new land, with the ship serving as temporary shelter.
