Scientists calculated Bitcoin’s carbon footprint: one transaction produces almost half a tonne of CO2

One Bitcoin network transaction generates about 486 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2). This is indicated by the results of a new study conducted by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Lucerne and the consulting company Swiss Economics on behalf of the German Federal Environment Agency.

For comparison, one transaction on the Ethereum network — the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization — is accompanied by emissions of only 0.003 kg of CO2. This is even less than during a typical money transfer via the popular payment system PayPal.
