The company OpenAI has secured up to 40% of the world's total DRAM supply for years to come. The company has entered agreements with Samsung and SK Hynix, which produce about 70% of the world's DRAM. Under these contracts, OpenAI receives approximately 900 thousand wafers per month — this amounts to tens of millions of modules and up to half of the global DRAM production.

The memory is purchased at the wafer level, rather than as finished chips, to bypass other customers. They are used for AI data centers and the Stargate project. The contracts are valid for at least until 2029, with possible extensions. Cheap DRAM will become scarce in the future.
