Why has the news only come out after all these days?
According to reports, at around 11 PM on January 10, 2026, UTC, a victim of a certain whale lost over 282 million USD worth of Litecoin (LTC) and Bitcoin (BTC) due to a social engineering scam involving a hardware wallet.
The attackers subsequently converted the stolen LTC and BTC into Monero (XMR) through several instant exchange platforms, causing the price of Monero to surge dramatically. Some BTC was also bridged to Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin networks via Thorchain.
