Turns out Hantavirus has been detected in Indonesia, just like on the cruise ship?
The Ministry of Health stated that there have been 23 cases of hantavirus reported in Indonesia from 2024 to now, with three fatalities.
Looking at its spread, this virus has infected survivors in areas such as Yogyakarta, West Java, Jakarta, North Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, West Sumatra, Banten, East Java, and even West Kalimantan, as reported by BBC.
However, these cases involve a different strain compared to the one on the MV Hondius cruise ship. This strain is known as Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) with a fatality rate ranging from 1 to 15%, particularly 13% in Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the situation on the MV Hondius involves Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS), which has a significantly higher mortality rate, between 12 to 60%. However, this figure heavily depends on the patient's condition, treatment, and severity.
Still, we need to stay vigilant about this epidemic. The highest transmission risk remains from direct contact with rodents through saliva, urine, and droppings. So far, there is no strong evidence that this virus can be transmitted from person to person.
