Financial fraud schemes involving cryptocurrency continue to draw federal enforcement action. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington announced on Feb. 20 that a Newcastle, Washington, man pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering tied to nearly $100 million in investment fraud proceeds.
Prosecutors detailed how Geoffrey K. Auyeung handled investor funds and redirected them through multiple financial channels as part of the conspiracy. The announcement states:
Much of the cryptocurrency was further transferred to accounts at the cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The Binance accounts were controlled by the same individual or individuals located in Nigeria and Russia. Victims were not sent any further information on their investment and Auyeung and others simply stopped responding,” the announcement adds.
Authorities outlined that Geoffrey K. Auyeung, 47, created nine entities, including Sea Forest International LLC, Apex Oil and Gas Trading LLC, and Navigator Energy Logistics LLC, to receive money from individuals who believed they were securing oil tank storage in Rotterdam, Netherlands, or Houston.
Investigators traced $97.1 million in domestic and international third-party wire transfers and deposits through accounts linked to Auyeung between June 2022 and July 2024, including approximately $24.7 million tied to about 35 victims. The Department of Justice (DOJ) explained:
Court filings indicate that he received at least $4,078,348 in commissions and misled banks about the source of funds and his role in fraud complaints. Even after his August 2024 indictment, he continued communicating with co-conspirators and accepted another $400,000 by channeling deposits through accounts in his wife’s name. Auyeung agreed to pay $24,707,031 in restitution and to forfeit approximately $2.3 million in seized funds, an Audi SQ8, $7.1 million from cryptocurrency wallets, and about $300,000 currently held in bank accounts. Sentencing is scheduled for May 12, and prosecutors plan to recommend 63 months in prison.

The token opened trading between $0.16 and $0.22 on platforms including Binance, Coinbase, and Upbit, briefly spiking toward $0.225 before heavy selling took over. By May 2, at 4 p.m. ET, MEGA was trading near $0.138, down -12% to -14% in the prior 24 hours, with a market cap of roughly $155 million to $157 million and a fully diluted valuation ( FDV) around $1.38 billion.
The 24-hour trading volume remains elevated at $109 million to $160 million, a figure high relative to the circulating market cap. That ratio signals active participation, though most of the volume reflects sellers finding exits rather than buyers building positions.
MegaETH is a high-performance Ethereum layer-two ( L2) blockchain designed for real-time execution, targeting sub-millisecond latency and more than 100,000 transactions per second for consumer applications like on-chain games, high-frequency decentralized finance (DeFi), and social platforms.
The project structured its tokenomics around performance milestones rather than a calendar-based vesting schedule. Of the 10 billion fixed token supply, only about 1.129 billion tokens, or 11.3%, entered circulation at the token generation event (TGE). The TGE is, at least so far, considered the largest TGE of 2026.
More than 5.3 billion tokens are allocated to staking rewards and ecosystem incentives, unlocked only when specific on-chain growth targets are met. The first milestone, requiring ten ecosystem applications each to reach 100,000 onchain transactions within 30 days, was cleared on April 23, triggering the TGE countdown.
The next major unlock target requires the network’s native stablecoin, USDM, to reach 500 million in circulating supply. USDM’s market cap stood near $300 million at launch. As of Saturday, USDM’s supply is now 463 million as it edges its way toward the unlock. The public token sale cleared at approximately $0.0999 per token, raising roughly $50 million.
Buyers from that sale are still sitting on gains near 70% at current prices, but most holders who entered at launch or shortly after are carrying losses. Sell pressure came from multiple directions at once: public sale participants taking profits, airdrop recipients liquidating, and early unlock holders exiting into listing liquidity. High- volume CEX listings on Binance and Coinbase gave sellers deep exit liquidity, amplifying the decline.
On the price chart, MEGA is trading below all major short-term moving averages on the 1-hour and 4-hour timeframes. The 50-period moving average (MA) near $0.16 to $0.17 is acting as dynamic resistance. The relative strength index ( RSI) on shorter timeframes is approaching oversold territory in the low 30s, raising the possibility of a short-term bounce, but no bullish divergence has formed so far this weekend.
Immediate support sits at $0.134 to $0.136. A close above $0.156 on the 4-hour chart would be the first signal that buyers are stepping in. Failure to hold $0.134 opens a path toward $0.12 to $0.13. If MEGA breaks those foundations, there’s a chance a slide below the TGE price could happen.
Despite the price weakness, onchain data tells a different story. MegaETH’s total value locked (TVL) climbed toward $600 million after launch, placing it among the top 15 L2 networks by TVL, according to defillama.com stats. That capital inflow occurred alongside the token sell-off, meaning real usage and ecosystem activity are running independently of near-term price action.
The longer-term case hinges on whether performance-gated tokenomics can limit dilution and whether TVL growth converts into sustained demand for MEGA. As USDM approaches its next target, the impending unlock draws closer by the day. The short-term picture remains bearish, and the asset carries only 72 hours of price history, making all technical signals highly sensitive to noise.
This isn’t the first TGE to experience a sharp selloff, and it likely won’t be the last.

The long-term vision for crypto, according to Colin, anticipates a transition from a purely “cryptonative” era to a more institutional and pragmatic phase over the next decade. He predicts that for the average person, the underlying blockchain infrastructure will “melt away at the UX level,” becoming an invisible rail for better, faster payment solutions. A major challenge remains a knowledge gap for small and mid-sized businesses. To address this, Morph is funding a $150 million payment accelerator to incentivize traditional payment businesses to migrate their transaction volume onto the Morph chain.

Asia reportedly drives nearly half of global stablecoin flows, powering cross-border trade and institutional liquidity. Yet in the major banks of Singapore, Hong Kong, and Jakarta, reception to stablecoins remains distinctly cold.
While some observers attribute this to a “generational gap” or a lack of technical understanding, Bernardo Bilotta, CEO and co-founder of Stables, argues that the reality is far more calculated. According to Bilotta, the reluctance of Asian banks to embrace stablecoins is not a failure of imagination but a masterclass in institutional self-preservation.
For a commercial bank, the most critical asset on the balance sheet is not cash or property; it is the relationship with the central bank. In many Southeast Asian markets, the regulatory environment for digital assets remains a moving target.
Taking on stablecoin exposure, even just for processing, means taking on reputational risk with the regulator before the rules are fully settled,” Bilotta said. In an environment where guidance can tighten significantly from one quarter to the next with little warning, the risk of a regulatory pivot makes long-term infrastructure investment a gamble most banks are unwilling to take.
Beyond local regulators, Asian banks must answer to a global hierarchy. To facilitate international trade, these institutions rely on correspondent banking relationships with partners in New York and London.
Bilotta points out a harsh reality of the current global financial plumbing: Compliance teams in Western financial hubs are notoriously risk-averse. If a bank in Jakarta or Bangkok begins dabbling in stablecoins, it risks being flagged by its Western partners. The threat of having a correspondent relationship terminated—effectively cutting a bank off from the U.S. dollar or euro markets—is a survival logic that far outweighs the potential profits of stablecoin integration.
Even for banks willing to look past the risk, a new hurdle has emerged: regulatory fragmentation. Across Asia, jurisdictions are taking vastly different paths. Singapore, for instance, has embedded stablecoin rules into its existing Payment Services Act, while Hong Kong recently enacted a standalone Stablecoins Ordinance.
Critics argue these silos hamper growth, as a token compliant in one city may face hurdles just an hour’s flight away. However, Bilotta views this not as a roadblock but as a necessary phase of convergence.
Framing it as purely a problem misses what’s actually happening,” Bilotta said. “Singapore and Hong Kong have different approaches to the same goal: treating stablecoins as regulated payment instruments. The underlying principles—reserve backing, redemption rights, and AML compliance—are converging.”
Until the cost of inaction exceeds the cost of action, the status quo holds,” Bilotta said. The cautious stance of Asian banks isn’t irrational—it is a defensive crouch. However, as the infrastructure layer becomes more robust and local-currency tokens begin to solve the “last-mile” problem, the pressure on these institutions will only grow. The question for Asia’s banking sector is no longer whether they understand the technology but how much longer they can afford to prioritize survival over evolution.
