What Is Cardano (ADA)?
Cardano is a third-generation proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain designed to offer scalability, security, and sustainability through peer-reviewed research and evidence-based development.
Cardano's history began with Charles Hoskinson, a mathematician and entrepreneur who co-founded Ethereum. In 2014, Hoskinson left after vision differences concerning the future of Ethereum. He wanted to build a blockchain platform that would address scalability, security, and sustainability challenges of existing systems. And so, IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong), a technology company dedicated to working on blockchain, was formed in 2015.
Gradually, Cardano has introduced several significant innovations:
Hydra – a Layer-2 scaling solution that supports thousands of transactions per second.
Mithril – improves node synchronization and network efficiency in general.
EVM-compatible sidechain – boosts interoperability and allows developers to run Ethereum smart contracts on Cardano.
The native currency, ADA, is the fuel of the Cardano blockchain and the growing world of applications and services that depend on it. Apart from transacting to pay for transaction fees, staking for network security, and voting in on-chain governance to decide the future of the platform, it also enables smart contract calls, decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, NFT marketplaces, and other services, making it a multi-purpose asset for Cardano blockchain users.
Cardano's Governance: Chang & Plomin Hard Forks
In 2025, Cardano embarked on the Voltaire era with the Chang hard fork, which implemented on-chain governance and the ability of ADA holders to vote on proposals, protocol upgrades, and funding initiatives.
Later on, the Plomin hard fork ratified the Cardano Constitution and included governance rules with treasury mechanisms, marking a significant milestone toward complete decentralization and community-led development.
Brave Wallet officially onboarded Cardano (ADA) so over 80 million users could store, exchange, and stake ADA natively from the privacy-focused browser. The feature also supports on-chain governance, so users can vote on proposals and utilize Cardano dApps without the need for external wallets. The integration is an important milestone for Cardano's 2025 roadmap to boost its Web3 adoption.
ADA is listed on Binance for trade and purchase. The current price of ADA is available and updated in real-time on Binance.
