
Global sales of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in April 2026 hit 1,228,773 units, marking a 16% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from Global EV Tracker by Morgan Stanley. However, compared to March 2026, when 1,320,686 units were sold, this figure dipped by 7%.
BYD emerged as the top global BEV manufacturer with 163,100 vehicles sold in April, followed by Tesla with 98,400 units and Geely with 80,600 units. The best-selling BEV model worldwide was the Tesla Model Y with 70,600 units, while unspecified light commercial vehicles accounted for 58,700 sales.
Tesla's share of the global BEV market in April 2026 was 8.0%, down from 13.8% in March and up from 7.7% in April 2025. In the US market, Tesla's share reached 45.0% in April, increasing from 40.0% a year earlier. According to Motor Intelligence, Tesla's share of the US BEV market grew to 46.9% in May 2026 compared to 45.2% in May 2025.
Regional sales showed mixed dynamics. BEV sales in the US dropped 19% year-on-year to 75,349 units in April 2026, with a market share of 5.5% compared to 6.3% in April 2025. BEV sales in Europe surged 38% to 298,203 units, with penetration reaching 25.9% versus 20.0% a year earlier. BEV sales in China fell by 1% to 642,317 units, with a market share of 30.1% compared to 28.9% in April 2025.
Ford sold 3,700 units of the Mustang Mach-E and 1,575 units of the F-150 Lightning worldwide in April. The Mustang Mach-E ranked sixth among the best-selling BEV models in the US market in April. Global sales of the Ford E-Transit increased by 77% year-on-year, reaching approximately 2,700 units.
General Motors reported 54,679 global BEV sales in April 2026, which is a 45% decrease year-on-year. Excluding joint ventures in China and the Wuling HongGuang Mini model, GM sold 10,800 electric vehicles in the US.
The total deployment volume of batteries reached 74,134 MWh in April 2026, up 17% from 63,202 MWh in April 2025. LFP chemistry accounted for 48% of deployments, NMC for 43%, and NCA for 5%.
