Californiana Discovers Cryptocurrency Scam with Help from ChatGPT

According to information from ChainCatcher, a resident of San Jose, California, named Margaret Loke, discovered that she had fallen victim to a cryptocurrency fraud scheme after seeking guidance from ChatGPT. In May, Loke met a man on Facebook who introduced himself as 'Ed,' claiming to be a successful businessman. Over time, he established an emotional bond with her and convinced her to invest money in digital assets.

The victim ended up sending over $490,000 from her retirement account, as well as another $300,000 obtained through a second mortgage on her home. When the platform where her crypto assets were supposedly held was 'blocked,' 'Ed' stated that it would be necessary to deposit another $1 million to regain access. Concerned, Loke reported everything to ChatGPT, which immediately recognized the pattern of the scam and recommended that she contact the authorities.

Subsequent investigations showed that the money was sent to a bank account in Malaysia and then withdrawn by the fraudsters.
