According to Lee, market makers in crypto function like “central banks,” providing liquidity to the market. When they run low on capital, they are forced to sell assets, which drives prices down sharply. This liquidation originated from a stablecoin price error on an exchange, dropping from $1 to $0.65 and triggering automatic ADL (Auto-Deleveraging) liquidations. The domino effect quickly spread to other exchanges, wiping out nearly 2 million accounts within minutes, even those that were previously profitable. Lee compared the event to a “market code error,” similar to financial shocks in 1987 and 2009, but without prompting regulatory tightening like on Wall Street. He did not reveal the identities of the affected market makers, only noting that he knew them but it was “not convenient to name them.” Lee predicts the market will need roughly two more weeks to fully absorb the fallout, similar to the eight-week liquidation cycle in 2022.
