27 June – St. Cyril of Alexandria
Bishop, Doctor of the Church & Defender of the Faith
Born around 376 in Alexandria, Egypt, Cyril succeeded his uncle as Patriarch in 412. He became one of the greatest theologians of the early Church, vigorously defending the divinity of Christ against the heresy of Nestorius at the Council of Ephesus in 431. He upheld the title Theotokos (“God-bearer”) for the Blessed Virgin Mary and wrote profound commentaries on Scripture. Known for his strong leadership and deep Marian devotion, he died on 27 June 444. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIII in 1882.
