28 June – St. Irenaeus of Lyons
Bishop, Martyr & Doctor of the Church

Born around 130 AD in Smyrna (modern Turkey), Irenaeus was a disciple of St. Polycarp. He became Bishop of Lyons in Gaul (France) and is one of the most important early Church Fathers. In his great work Against Heresies, he brilliantly refuted Gnosticism and defended apostolic tradition, the unity of the Old and New Testaments, and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. He emphasized that “the glory of God is man fully alive.” He died around 202 AD, possibly as a martyr. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Francis in 2022.

“The Church, spread throughout the world, received from the Apostles and their disciples the faith in one God.”

A tireless guardian of apostolic truth against error — showing that faithful transmission of doctrine and love for the Church preserve the Gospel across generations.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. Irenaeus, grant us zeal for orthodoxy, love for Sacred Tradition, courage to defend the faith, and the grace to live fully alive in Your glory.
