Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on July 2 that the federal government has formally submitted a proposal to advance construction of a West Coast crude oil pipeline project for review by the National Major Projects Office.

According to Jin10, a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office said the project would follow the existing Trans Mountain pipeline route, transporting crude oil from Alberta to the coast of British Columbia.

The project is designed to have a transport capacity of about 1 million barrels per day. It aims to ship Canadian oil to global markets and reduce dependence on the U.S. market.

The Canadian federal government and Alberta reached a memorandum of understanding on the project in November 2025 and signed a project implementation agreement in May 2026.

The release said the project is to be developed by Trans Mountain Corporation, with Pembina Pipeline Corporation participating as a private-sector investor.
