Fortress: A Lesson in Sovereignty
Just landed back in the Eastern Cape after a 10-day mission in JHB and I’m still thinking about it. While I was there I went to the South African Gold Reserve (SAGR) with my broker and a friend to get some assets from the vault. Driving past that big silver and gold "Egg" building in Sandton—The Marc—it really made me realize how much security matters.

​I was looking closely at the glass on that building. It’s not just two-tone glass; it’s actually made of squares that are split point-to-point into two triangles. One half is gold or silver, and the other half is a tinted polaroid glass. I noticed the gold is actually a double row or line going all the way around the building, while the silver is a single row also going all the way around. It creates this amazing mirror illusion that changes as you drive by. It makes perfect sense for a place where the Scoin shop is—it looks like a vault made of precious metals!

I had over 400k on my back and let me tell you, trying to act calm was a mission on its own! At JHB security I had to ask for a private room like four times because the guy couldn't hear me over the noise. Once we were inside he asked how I came to own so many and I just told him it was a very very long term investment. Which is the truth. My friend I was traveling with was even able to pay for me to enter the FNB Lounge just for that extra safetyness while we waited.

The trip home on the Air Link plane was another lesson in trust. A lady forgot her bag on the Air Bus transfer and the security told her she couldn't go back on the tarmac. Since I hadn't crossed the line yet I offered to go for her. I had to check her ticket against the bag and show the security it was all correct before they let me bring it back. I even tried to assist a lady in a wheel-chair crossing over from one wheel-chair that was from the Air Craft to the one on the tarmac. She was able to crossover with the assistant of the help of the security, I just moved in the area if she needed an extra person to hold onto as she moved to the next wheel-chair. It’s all about verification.
