One of the things beginners in crypto need the most is using a secure wallet.
MetaMask is one of the most widely used self custody wallets on Ethereum and EVM compatible networks. This means the control of the wallet belongs entirely to the user. That is why small mistakes made during setup can lead to major problems later.
📌 In this guide I explain step by step how to set up a MetaMask wallet and what you need to pay attention to.
1️⃣ Download MetaMask from the Official Source
➤ The first step is to download MetaMask from the correct source.
➤ If you are using a browser extension, download the extension for Chrome, Firefox, or supported browsers from the official MetaMask website.
➤ If you are using mobile, download the official MetaMask app from the App Store or Google Play.
The most important thing you need to pay attention to here is this. There may be fake MetaMask apps and fake websites. That is why you should not download it from ad links or unknown websites.
2️⃣ Create a New Wallet
➤ After MetaMask is installed, open the app. You will see two options:
Create a new wallet
Import an existing wallet
➤ If you have not used MetaMask before create a new wallet with the “Create a new wallet” option.
➤ At this stage, you will be asked to set a password. This password is used to log in to MetaMask on the device you are using. However this password is not the real key to your wallet.
The real important part is the Secret Recovery Phrase words given in the next step.
3️⃣ Store Your Secret Recovery Phrase Safely
➤ MetaMask gives you a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. These words are the key to your wallet. If you lose your device, your phone breaks, or MetaMask is deleted, you can restore your wallet with these 12 words.
But if someone else gets access to these words, they can fully control the assets in your wallet. That is why:
● Do not take a screenshot
● Do not save it on your phone
● Do not write it in a note on your computer
● Do not send it to yourself through Telegram, WhatsApp, or email
● Do not share it with anyone
The safest method is to write the words on paper and store them in a secure place.
Remember!
● If you lose your Secret Recovery Phrase, you may not be able to recover your wallet.
● If someone else learns your Secret Recovery Phrase, they can drain your wallet.
4️⃣ Verify the Words
➤ MetaMask may ask you to select some words to make sure you saved your Secret Recovery Phrase correctly. Complete this step carefully.
➤ The order of the words is important. If they are written in the wrong order, the wallet cannot be restored.
After completing this step, your wallet becomes active.
5️⃣ Check Your Wallet Address
➤ When MetaMask opens, you will see your wallet address at the top. This address usually looks like this:
A long address starting with 0x.
➤ This address is your public wallet address. You can share this address with people who want to send you tokens.
The important distinction here is this. A public address can be shared. A Secret Recovery Phrase and private key must never be shared.
6️⃣ Learn Network Selection
➤ MetaMask opens on the Ethereum network by default. However, over time, you may need to use different networks.
For example:
BNB Chain
Arbitrum
Optimism
Polygon
Base
Avalanche
● Before making a token transaction or any transaction, check that you are on the correct network. Selecting the wrong network is one of the most common mistakes beginners make.
Example:
● If you receive a token sent through BNB Chain and look for it on the Ethereum network, you will not see it. The token may look lost, but it is actually on a different network.
7️⃣ Make a Small Test Transfer to Your Wallet
➤ After setting up a new wallet, it is safer to make a small test transfer before sending a large amount of money.
● First, send a small amount.
● Check that it arrived in the wallet.
● If everything is correct, then make the main transfer.
This habit can prevent major mistakes. Rushing in crypto is often expensive.
8️⃣ Be Careful with DApp Connections
➤ You can connect to DeFi, NFT and different Web3 applications with MetaMask. But not every site is safe.
Before connecting your wallet, check these:
● Is the website correct?
● Did the link come from official sources?
● Is the Twitter/X account real?
● What approval is the wallet asking from you?
● Are you giving unlimited token approval?
Connecting your wallet to unknown sites carries serious risk. Be especially careful with pages that pressure you with phrases like “free mint,” “airdrop claim,” or “urgent reward.”
9️⃣ Check Token Approvals
➤ In some DeFi transactions, your wallet may ask for token spending approval. This is normal. However, some malicious websites may take unlimited approval and put the tokens in your wallet at risk.
That is why you should not skip approval screens without reading them. If needed, you can later check and revoke token approvals.
