Midnight is a privacy focused, "fourth generation" blockchain designed by Input Output Global (IOG), the team behind Cardano. It is built as a partner chain to Cardano, meaning it can leverage Cardano’s security while operating as its own distinct network. The core mission of Midnight is to solve the "transparency paradox", while public blockchains are great for trust, they are often unusable for businesses or individuals who cannot reveal sensitive data (like medical records, private contracts, or credit scores) to the entire world.
Key Features & Technology
Zero Knowledge Proofs , Midnight uses advanced cryptography to allow users to prove a fact is true without revealing the actual data behind it.
Unlike "privacy coins" that hide everything from everyone, Midnight allows for programmable privacy. A user can keep their data private from the public but selectively share it with a regulator or a specific third party to ensure compliance with laws (like KYC/AML).
To make it developer friendly, Midnight uses a programming language called Compact, which is based on TypeScript. This allows traditional web developers to build privacy preserving smart contracts without being cryptography experts.
Dual Token Model
Midnight uses two distinct tokens to balance governance, security, and privacy:
Token Type Purpose
NIGHT Unshielded The governance and utility token. It is used for staking, securing the network, and voting. It is public and "regulatory friendly."
DUST Shielded A "resource" token generated by holding NIGHT. It is used to pay for private transaction fees and acts as the "fuel" for shielded operations.
