Most protocols compete on features. Walrus competes on survival. This difference is not cosmetic. Participants are rewarded for maintaining continuity, not for cycling quickly through activity. This discourages behavior that weakens the network over time. Instead, it encourages stewardship. What stands out most to me is that Walrus treats time itself as part of the system. Many protocols behave as if time is neutral. Walrus treats time as adversarial. Data must survive it.
