Originally proposed by Vitalik Buterin and Joseph Poon, #plasma is a "Layer 2" scaling solution designed to help blockchains like Ethereum handle thousands of transactions per second. It works by creating "child chains" that sit on top of the main "parent" blockchain.
How it works: Instead of recording every tiny transaction on the main Ethereum network, these child chains process the data independently. They only periodically send a small summary (a "state commitment") back to the main chain.
Security: If something goes wrong on a child chain, users can use "fraud proofs" to safely withdraw their funds back to the main Ethereum chain. This makes it much faster and cheaper than using the mainnet directly.$XPL
