$NIGHT is the main token powering the privacy-focused blockchain Midnight. What makes it different from many other crypto tokens is how it is used. Normally, when you make a transaction on a blockchain, the token you pay as a fee is spent and gone. With NIGHT, it works in a smarter way.
Instead of being spent, NIGHT continuously creates a resource called DUST. DUST is what actually pays for transactions on the network. A simple way to imagine it is this: NIGHT is like a power plant, and DUST is the electricity it produces. As long as you hold NIGHT, it keeps generating DUST, giving you the energy needed to use the network without losing your main tokens.
There will be 24 billion #night tokens in total. They are first created on the Cardano blockchain and then mirrored on Midnight’s own chain. Each NIGHT token can be divided into very small units called STARs, making it flexible for everyday transactions and small payments.
Midnight also wants its token distribution to be fair and community-focused. Instead of giving most tokens to insiders or early investors, the project is rolling them out through multiple public phases. One of the first steps is the “Glacier Drop,” which aims to give broader access to the community.
NIGHT also plays an important role in governance. This means holders will be able to vote on decisions about how the network grows and improves. It will also be used for block rewards, which are incentives for the people running nodes that help keep the Midnight network secure and running smoothly.
In the beginning, some decisions will be guided by a smaller group, but over time the goal is to move toward full decentralization, where the community itself makes the major decisions.
Looking ahead, @MidnightNetwork plans to become multichain. This means users may eventually be able to pay network fees not only with NIGHT but also with other crypto tokens—or even traditional money. Some applications might even sponsor transaction fees for users, making the experience easier and more accessible for everyone.
