The Ethereum roadmap, as outlined by Vitalik Buterin, is a multi-year technical evolution focused on improving the network’s scalability, security, and decentralization. Originally centered on a "rollup-centric" model, the roadmap has recently shifted to prioritize base-layer scaling alongside Layer 2 (L2) solutions due to the slower-than-expected decentralization of L2s.

As of March 2026, the roadmap is organized into six core, concurrent phases:

1. The Merge

Goal: Ensure a simple, resilient Proof-of-Stake (PoS) system.

Status: Successfully completed in September 2022.

Next Steps: Focuses on "Single Slot Finality" (SSF) to make the chain finalize blocks faster and improve security.

2. The Surge

Goal: Reach 100,000+ transactions per second (TPS) across L1 and L2s.

Key Tech: Uses Data Availability Sampling (DAS) and "blobs" (EIP-4844) to lower costs for rollups.

Update: Recent focus includes expanding "blob" capacity significantly via upgrades like Fusaka by late 2026.

3. The Scourge

Goal: Combat economic centralization and censorship risks, particularly from MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) and liquid staking pools like Lido.

Action: Implementing "inclusion lists" and distributed block building to ensure no single entity controls transaction ordering.

4. The Verge

Goal: Make block verification so easy that it can be done on a phone or smartwatch.

Key Tech: Moving from Merkle trees to Verkle trees (or similar "stateless" solutions) to reduce the data nodes need to store.

5. The Purge

Goal: Simplify the protocol by removing old history and technical debt.

Impact: Reduces the hard drive space required to run a node, keeping the network decentralized as it grows.

6. The Splurge

Goal: A "catch-all" for miscellaneous improvements like Account Abstraction (making wallets easier to use) and EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) optimizations.

2026 Strategic Shifts

End of "Rollup-Centric" Exclusivity: Vitalik recently signaled a "new path" that balances L2 scaling with stronger L1 performance because L2s haven't reached "Stage 2" (full decentralization) as quickly as hoped.

Quantum Resistance: New plans (EIP-8141) are being integrated to prepare Ethereum for future quantum computing threats.

AI Acceleration: Vitalik has noted that AI-assisted coding ("vibe-coding") may accelerate the completion of this roadmap toward 2030 faster than previously expected.
