Asiyah Women's Center, founded in 2018, is the first emergency shelter in New York City and New Jersey specifically designed for survivors from Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, South Asian, and Black, Indigenous, People of Color communities.

In a city where domestic violence shelters are already stretched, Asiyah fills a gap that almost no one else is filling — providing trauma-informed, culturally competent housing for survivors of domestic and gender-based violence, homelessness, and eviction risks.

Since opening its doors, the center has supported over 1,000 women and families.
And then the government pulled their funding.

Asiyah's founder and executive director, Dania Darwish, has described how the organization lost federal funding during the Trump administration while refusing to compromise its advocacy on behalf of victims.

Her words:
"Survivors cannot wait for political climates to shift."

This is not a trendy cause and it is not safe work. It is a front-line operation with women who are escaping violent partners, trafficking networks and coercive control — often with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.
