$ZEC

🔹 Origins (2013–2016)

The roots of Zcash go back to the Zerocoin project (2013), created by cryptographer Matthew D. Green and his students at Johns Hopkins University.

Zerocoin aimed to add privacy to Bitcoin, but it evolved into a separate protocol called Zerocash.

In 2016, engineer and cybersecurity expert Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn and the Electric Coin Company (ECC) launched Zcash (ZEC) — the first cryptocurrency to utilize zk-SNARKs, a breakthrough zero-knowledge cryptographic method.

Zcash officially launched on:

📅 October 28, 2016

🔹 Key Innovations

1. zk-SNARKs (Zero-Knowledge Proofs)

Zcash was the first major blockchain to implement fully private transactions using zero-knowledge proofs.

This allows users to prove a transaction is valid without revealing:

  • sender

  • receiver

  • amount

Users can choose:

  • Transparent addresses (t-addresses)

  • Shielded/private addresses (z-addresses)

This flexibility distinguished Zcash from Monero, which uses mandatory privacy.

🔹 Development Timeline

2016 — Launch

  • ZEC launches with a very limited initial supply, causing extremely high early prices.

  • Introduced the concept of the Founders’ Reward, allocating part of block rewards to early investors and developers.

2017–2018 — Growth & Major Exchanges

  • ZEC is listed on major exchanges (e.g., Coinbase in 2018).

  • “Sapling” upgrade planned, aiming to improve efficiency of shielded transactions.

  • 2018 — Sapling Upgrad

  • Massive performance improvements to zk-proofs.

  • Shielded transactions become lighter and faster.

    2020 — Halving & NU upgrades

  • First Zcash block reward halving occurs.

  • Canopy upgrade ends the Founders’ Reward and introduces a new development fund with community input.

2022 — Halo 2

  • Transition to Halo 2, a next-generation zero-knowledge proving system with:

    • No trusted setup

    • More scalability

This marks a major cryptographic breakthrough for privacy-centric blockchains.

2023–2024 — Mobile + Light Clients

  • Zcash focuses on mobile adoption, light wallets, and improving shielded user experience.

  • Ongoing development aims to position ZEC as a scalable, private payment layer.

  • 🔹 Purpose of Zcash

ZEC was designed to be:

  • A privacy-preserving digital cash

  • Fast and low-fee

  • Secure through advanced cryptography

  • Flexible (transparent or private)

Its slogan is often summarized as:

“Privacy for everyone.”

🔹 Zcash Today

Zcash remains one of the most respected privacy coins and a pioneer in zero-knowledge cryptography. Much of today’s zk-tech in Ethereum, L2s, and scaling originates from ideas first proven in Zcash.$ZEC
