Priest, Missionary & Apostle of California
Born on 24 November 1713 in Mallorca, Spain, Miguel José Serra joined the Franciscans and took the name Junipero. He arrived in Mexico in 1750 and later led the missionary effort in Alta California, founding nine missions along the El Camino Real. A tireless evangelist, he baptized thousands of Native Americans, defended their rights against colonial abuses, and established a lasting Christian presence in the American West despite severe health issues. He died on 28 August 1784 at Mission San Carlos Borromeo. Canonized by Pope Francis in 2015.
