When I went into fogo lots of doubt's in my mind earlier about architecture but Fogo proved it wrong. Because fogo is a database system designed around the principle that predictability matters as much as raw speed and its architecture reflects that philosophy at every layer.
I guess Fogo separates the concerns of storage and compute in a way that eliminates the common sources of latency variance. Rather than relying on a general purpose storage engine where garbage collection compaction or background writes can suddenly steal cycles from foreground queries. Fogo uses a log structured approach with explicit bounded I/O budgets. Every operation knows ahead of time how many reads and writes it is allowed to perform, which means tail latencies are constrained by design rather than by luck.
Setup is unique and the memory management model is similarly disciplined approach for beginners too. Fogo avoids dynamic memory allocation on the critical path entirely. Memory regions are pre allocated and partitioned at startup so there are no allocation failures, no heap fragmentation spirals and no pauses caused by the runtime deciding it needs to reorganize memory mid query. Each query is handed a fixed arena from which it can work and when the query completes, that arena is simply reset.
Concurrency control is handled through a carefully structured system that avoids lock contention on shared data structures and facilitate the users. Rather than using traditional locking Fogo uses epoch based reclamation and per core data partitioning so that threads rarely need to coordinate. When they do, the coordination is through lock free primitives with known worst case behavior rather than mutexes that can cause unbounded waiting.
This is a plus point of Fogo that Scheduling is another lever Fogo pulls deliberately. It maps query execution onto dedicated threads that are pinned to specific CPU cores which eliminates context switching overhead and ensures that CPU caches remain warm across related operations. The OS scheduler is essentially removed from the equation for the hot path.
Fogo's query planner is built to produce plans with predictable cost profiles and making more convenient. It prefers algorithms with bounded memory usage and consistent time complexity over algorithms that are faster on average but have catastrophic worst cases.
