But here's the model that explains why.
Think of gold as an insurance policy on the entire financial system.
Its value equals the sum insured, all global stocks, bonds, and cash, times an insurance premium rate.
That premium rate is the market's fear of wealth confiscation.
Debasement, government default, or a banking collapse.
The higher the fear, the higher gold's premium.
Since 1971, this rate has averaged around 5%. But it swings violently with fear.
It hit 20% in the 1970s inflation shock. Over 10% after the financial crisis.
And it recently surged past 10% again, on "Trump 2.0" fears and central bank worries about the dollar.
Now that fear is fading, and the premium is reverting to its 5% average, just like after every past extreme.
For that to happen, gold must underperform financial assets by another 35%.
