#newt $NEWT I used to think automation reduced the number of decisions humans had to make.
Now I'm beginning to think it simply moves those decisions to an earlier point in time.
Before an autonomous system ever executes a transaction, someone has already decided its permissions, boundaries, and acceptable behavior. Those choices become invisible once the system starts operating, but they continue influncing every action that follows. The interesting question isn't whether an AI can make good decisions. It's whether the people who defined its authority made good decisions before the AI ever became active.
Reading more about @NewtonProtocol pushed me toward that perspective. I found myself paying less attention to autonomous execution itself and more attention to the authorization layer surrounding it. Defining boundaries before settlement doesn't remove human judgment—it preserves it in a form the system can consistently apply.
Maybe that's what responsible automation ultimately looks like.
Not replacing human decisions.
Making the important ones happen before execution begins.
