British Muslim Leadership Looks to Grassroots Mobilisation for Greater Civic Impact
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), under the leadership of Wajid Akhter, is pursuing a renewed strategy to strengthen civic engagement among British Muslims. Drawing inspiration from the successful grassroots campaign of Zohran Mamdani, the council is focusing on combining digital outreach with community-based organizing.
Through its “Hungry for Change” initiative, the MCB aims to increase voter registration and participation, already mobilizing hundreds of volunteers across multiple regions. The effort reflects a broader shift away from reliance on government engagement toward empowering local communities and addressing domestic priorities such as housing, public safety, and economic opportunity.
The initiative also reimagines the role of mosques as community hubs, expanding services beyond worship to include social support and public health initiatives. At its core, the campaign highlights a growing emphasis on grassroots action, civic responsibility, and inclusive participation in shaping the UK’s social and political landscape.
