Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine — August 3, 2025 – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed today that its team stationed at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant heard loud explosions and witnessed smoke rising from a location approximately 1,200 meters away from the facility. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over nuclear safety in the war-torn region.

According to the IAEA’s official statement, the blasts were caused by air strikes and drone attacks targeting an external auxiliary structure near the plant. Despite the intensity of the explosions, no changes in radiation levels have been reported so far, indicating that the plant’s reactors and safety systems remain intact.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi reiterated that these recurring incidents pose a significant threat to nuclear safety, calling on all parties to refrain from any military operations in or around the nuclear site. He warned that "nuclear safety must never be compromised by armed conflict."

The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe's largest nuclear power facility, has been under Russian military control since the early stages of the war, making any surrounding attacks particularly dangerous.
