12 June – St. John of Sahagún

Priest, Confessor & Patron of Salamanca

Born John González around 1430 in Sahagún, Spain, he studied at the University of Salamanca and was ordained. After a serious illness, he reformed his life, becoming known for powerful preaching against sin, defense of the poor, and reconciliation of enemies. He served as a canon and later joined the Augustinian Order, living a life of strict penance, prayer, and Eucharistic devotion. Famous for miracles and for boldly confronting injustice, he died on 11 June 1479 (feast observed on 12 June). Canonized by Pope Alexander VIII in 1690.

“Speak the truth, even if it costs you your life.”

A brilliant preacher and peacemaker who used his gifts entirely for God and neighbor — showing that holiness combines intellectual depth, fearless truth-telling, and tender care for souls.

Lord Jesus, through the intercession of St. John of Sahagún, grant us zeal for preaching and living the Gospel, courage to defend justice, and a deep love for the Eucharist and the poor.
