I have watched a lot of projects that talk about keeping our information private. They say they can help with lots of things but when you ask them to give you an example they cannot do it. Midnight is different because it is trying to solve problems that people are dealing with right now like helping with artificial intelligence sharing health information and making sure banks are following the rules. These are not just ideas they are problems that people are spending money to fix.

What keeps me interested in Midnight is that it is trying to solve these problems in a way.
The part about intelligence is what I want to talk about because it is the most interesting example and also the one that shows the biggest problem with Midnights plan.
Midnight says that artificial intelligence is being held back because people do not trust it with their information. To train intelligence you need a lot of data but people and organizations are careful about how their information is used. Midnights solution is to use something called privacy that makes sure the data is used in a responsible way. The technology they use called zero-knowledge architecture allows the artificial intelligence to be trained on data without the person running the artificial intelligence seeing the actual data. That sounds like it could solve the problem of people not trusting intelligence with their information.

Midnight Network Targets AI and Healthcare and the Hard Part Is Not the Technology

Here is where things get complicated. The organizations that have the valuable data for training artificial intelligence are big, like hospitals, banks and governments. To get these organizations to change how they handle data Midnight has to go through a lot of steps like getting approval from lawyers and making sure they are following all the rules. The technical part of Midnights solution is real. Getting people to actually use it is a much harder problem that Midnight does not really talk about.
When you look at healthcare this problem gets even worse. Midnight says it can help share health information between people and organizations without putting private information at risk. That is a problem because when people go to different doctors it is hard to share their medical history. But healthcare information is not just private it is also regulated by laws like HIPAA in the United States and GDPR in Europe. These laws say how patient data can be used and shared. Even if Midnights technology can prove that a patients information is being kept private it is not clear if that will be enough to satisfy the regulators.
Midnights documents say that programmable privacy can solve the problem of healthcare information not being shared. I want to believe that. The problem is that just having good technology is not enough. Most projects that try to solve this problem get stuck because they cannot meet all the requirements.
The same problem exists with intelligence. Even if Midnights technology can prove that the data is being kept private the company using the intelligence still needs to explain to regulators and lawyers how they are using the data. Midnight has not explained how it will connect the part of its solution to the regulatory requirements.
The idea behind Midnight is good. The technology is going in the right direction. Healthcare and artificial intelligence are where this kind of technology is needed.. The question is, how will Midnight make sure that its technology meets all the regulatory requirements in different countries and regions.
When a healthcare institution or an artificial intelligence company uses Midnights technology what kind of documents will it produce to show that it is following all the rules, like HIPAA and GDPR.
