Israeli forces are continuing to bombard residential areas in southern Lebanon, leaving a trail of devastation that has shattered the lives of thousands of families.
Hasan Omar, a resident of Saksakiyeh in Sidon, where recent attacks killed at least seven people and wounded 17 others, said the victims were exclusively families seeking refuge. “Children – they were targeting children and civilians. They ran away from Nabatieh, and they targeted them here; all children and women. The people fled from Nabatieh to look for a safe house,” he told Reuters.
Omar also questioned the intent behind the military’s actions: “Who is the Israeli military sending this message to? I don’t understand; nobody understands.”
Mohammed Dahaineh, a rescue worker in Tyre, described the frantic moments after a forced evacuation order from the Israeli military.
“First, the Israeli military issued a threat to the town, so we immediately came and told the people to evacuate because we didn’t know which house the air strike would hit,” Dahaineh told Reuters.
He noted that while the town was largely cleared, some people had remained behind before the bombardment began. “The town was completely evacuated, except for some families who stayed in their homes,” he explained.
“Then the air strike happened. We treated five wounded and five martyrs.”

This visit is about re-establishing relations and discussing cooperation on a few key issues, particularly in the context of the wider regional war, Israel’s campaign in Lebanon, and it’s continued occupation and operations in southern Syria.
On the table, number one, border and security issues. There has long been a problem with the smuggling of drugs and arms between Lebanon and Syria, notably because Syria used to be part of the land route between Iran and its ally Hezbollah.
That decreased massively after the fall of the Assad regime, but in the last couple of months, Syrian authorities have announced a number of operations and arrests, and the dismantling of tunnels, which they said were used for the attempted smuggling of weapons into Lebanon.
Significantly, in the last week, they’ve also announced the arrest of several members of what they described as Hezbollah cells who were attempting attacks on the Syrian government; and last month, there were also arrests of Hezbollah cells that were said to be attempting to fire rockets into northern Israel.
The governments of Syria and Lebanon find themselves aligned at this moment on trying to rein in Hezbollah.
Also on the table is cooperation on the issues of trade, the economy, and the return of Syrian prisoners – more than 2,000 of whom remain detained inside Lebanon, with many accused of ‘terrorism’ offences – and the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
Despite a spike in returns due to the war there, there are still more than 1 million Syrians displaced in Lebanon.

He said first responders have become targets themselves.
“We’re under threat every second. Every day we ask ourselves if we’re going to survive or are we going to die? We know we’ve already given up our lives working here. We’ve lost so many people, and it feels like we’re already gone as well,” Safiuddin said.
The civil defence worker knows loss personally. His daughter was killed in an Israeli strike during the 2006 war.
According to the UN, at least 103 Lebanese medical workers have been killed and more than 230 wounded in over 130 Israeli strikes since March 2. Rights groups say Israel is targeting medical personnel and ambulances in southern Lebanon, rejecting Israeli claims that Hezbollah is using ambulances to transport weapons and fighters.
“As the civil defense in Lebanon we have international protections. We have symbols on our vehicles recognized by the United Nations to protect us. Our ambulances carry stretchers and bandages for the injured people we’re trying to help, nothing else,” Safiuddin said.

Hezbollah claims first attack in Israel since ceasefire deal was announced 🚨
Hezbollah attacked a military base in Israel on Friday, marking the first time the Iranian-backed militant group has publicly claimed responsibility for a cross-border strike since a delicate truce between Israel and Lebanon was ordered in mid-April.
In a statement, Hezbollah said they targeted a military base south of the city of Nahariya with “a barrage of advanced missiles” on Friday afternoon.
Earlier on Friday, the Israeli Air Force intercepted one launch after “a number of launches were detected toward Israeli territory,” according to the Israeli military. “Additional launches fell in open areas. No injuries were reported,” the military said in a statement, accusing Hezbollah of “an additional violation of the ceasefire.”
The Israeli military has said on several occasions that Hezbollah projectiles landed in northern Israel, after the US announced a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon to come into effect at midnight local time on April 17.
Both Israel and Hezbollah have accused each other of violating the terms of the truce, which was extended by three weeks in late April.
