Rising Fuel Prices Drive Philippines to a 4-Day Workweek

$DEGO $HANA $POWER

The Philippine government has officially switched to a four-day workweek for many state offices starting March 9, 2026. This change was ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. as global oil prices spiked due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the U.S. in the Middle East. By cutting down the workdays, the government hopes to lower national energy use and help the country manage the rising costs of imported fuel.

To make up for the shorter week, employees now work longer hours—typically 10 hours a day from Monday to Thursday. Government agencies are also being told to limit air conditioning and avoid unnecessary travel to save even more power. Even the Supreme Court has joined in, allowing staff to work from home one day a week to reduce the number of people commuting during this energy crisis.

While police and emergency workers still work their regular shifts, the government is asking private businesses to offer flexible schedules too. This helps workers who are struggling with higher jeepney and bus fares. These changes are temporary, and the government will review the situation once the tensions in the Middle East settle and oil prices become more stable.
