Putin receives ‘identical welcome treatment’ as Trump in Beijing 🚨
We were expecting a more low-key ceremony, but he actually received an identical welcome treatment as Trump last week.
He had the red carpet rolled out for him; he received a 21-gun salute, as well as children waving Russian and Chinese flags, saying, ‘We warmly welcome you.’
The only difference is who greeted Putin at the airport. With Trump, it was Han Zheng, the vice president, and for Putin, it was Wang Yi, the foreign minister.
Now, the two leaders have already started their meetings at the Great Hall of the People, and we’ve had some comments already from President Xi.
He says the two countries had deepened “political mutual trust and strategic cooperation” in a world that is “increasingly chaotic” and where “hegemony is overwhelming”.
He also called on China and Russia to promote “a more just and reasonable global governance system”.
Those comments tell us two things. First, Beijing and Moscow share a depth of established trust that simply does not exist between China and the US. Second, Xi is calling for a more multipolar world, where the US has less power and influence.
