Trump shifting focus to Abraham Accords amid stalled negotiations with Iran 🚨
Trump’s insistence on the “immediate signing” of the Abraham Accords to normalise ties with Israel is an attempt to add a new dimension to the negotiations with Iran, said Zeidon Alkinani, a Middle East political analyst and Founding Director of the Arab Perspectives Institute.
Similarly to how the Strait of Hormuz focused attention away from regime change in Iran and conversations around its nuclear programme, the Trump administration is now “adding another layer” that it can sell to the American public as a symbolic achievement.
“[It is also] adding another convincing point for the Israelis, who seem to be against [a deal],” the analyst added. “We are aware that the Trump administration isn’t only negotiating with the Iranians, it’s also negotiating simultaneously with the Israelis and trying to balance between the two.”
