Speaking at the premiere of Melania Trump's documentary, the US president said it was dangerous for the UK to enter into business relations with Beijing.
Trump was asked to comment on the rapprochement between London and Beijing against the backdrop of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's visit to China.
During a meeting with Chinese President, Starmer announced his intention to build a "more elegant" relationship with China. The parties agreed to expand trade and investment, and Beijing introduced a 30-day visa-free regime for UK citizens.
The US president called these steps "dangerous" and mentioned Canada, which also recently concluded a number of agreements with China.
"It's very dangerous for them, and even more dangerous for Canada to enter into business relations with China. Canada is not going through the best of times. They are in a very bad situation. And China cannot be a way out of this situation. The first thing they will do is ban hockey. Canada will not like that," Trump said.
