1ST READING: 2 Kings 2:1.6-14
Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. [They came to Jericho, and] Elijah said to Elisha, "Tarry here, I beg you; II for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan." But he said, "As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on. Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. Then Elijah took his coat, and rolled it up, and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "I beg you, let me inherit a double share of your spirit." And he said, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if you do not see me, it shall not be so." And as they still went on and talked, behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it and cried, "My father, my father! the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. And he took up the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. Then he took the coat of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, saying, "Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?" And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other; and Elisha went over.

At that time: Jesus said to his disciples, "Beware of practicing your piety before men to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. "Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. Reflection:
"In today’s reading, Elijah’s departure and Elisha’s inheritance of his spirit reveal the continuity of God’s mission through faithful hearts. Elisha’s persistence — refusing to leave Elijah — reflects the true disciple’s determination to follow God’s call to the end. When Elijah is taken up in the fiery chariot, Elisha receives not just his master’s cloak but a double portion of his prophetic spirit. His first act, parting the Jordan as Elijah did, shows that God’s power remains active in those who trust and obey Him. This story reminds us that divine grace does not die with one servant; it flows on through those who remain steadfast and humble before God. In the GOSPEL, Jesus teaches that authentic righteousness is not measured by public display but by the sincerity of the heart. Acts of giving, prayer, and fasting should spring from love, not pride. God sees what is done in secret and rewards those whose devotion seeks only His approval. Together, the readings invite us to interior purity and faithful perseverance — to carry on God’s work quietly, courageously, and with hearts centered on Him, trusting that His Spirit will empower us as it did Elisha. Jesus, I trust in you.

[بعد موت نابوت، جاء كلمة الرب إلى إيليا التيشبي، قائلاً: "قم، اذهب لملاقاة آخاب ملك إسرائيل، الذي في السامرة؛ ها هو في كرم نابوت، حيث ذهب لأخذ الملكية. ويجب أن تقول له: 'هكذا يقول الرب، "هل قتلت وأيضًا أخذت الملكية؟" ويجب أن تقول له: 'هكذا يقول الرب: "في المكان الذي لعقت فيه الكلاب دم نابوت، ستلعق الكلاب دمك." قال آخاب لإيليا، "هل وجدتني، يا عدوي؟" أجاب، "لقد وجدتُك، لأنك بعت نفسك لتفعل الشر في عيني الرب. ها أنا سأجلب الشر عليك؛ سأجرفك تمامًا، وسأقطع من آخاب كل ذكر، عبد أو حر، في إسرائيل؛ وسأجعل بيتك كبيت يربعام ابن نباط، وكبيت بعشا ابن أخيا، من أجل الغضب الذي أثرتني به، ولأنك جعلت إسرائيل تُخطئ. وعن إيزابل قال الرب أيضًا: 'ستأكل الكلاب إيزابل داخل حدود يزرعيل! أي شخص ينتمي إلى آخاب يموت في المدينة، ستأكل الكلاب؛ وأي شخص من الذين يموتون في الريف، ستأكل الطيور من السماء." At that time, Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. And after this Ahab said to Naboth, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house; and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money." But Naboth said to Ahab, "The Lord forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers." And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him; for he had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food. But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, "Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?" And he said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, 'Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it'; and he answered, 'I will not give you my vineyard." And Jezebel his wife said to him, "Do you now govern Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite." So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who dwelt with Naboth in his city. And she wrote in the letters, "Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people; and set two base fellows opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, 'You have cursed God and the king.' Then take him out, and stone him to death." And the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters which she had sent to them, they proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. And the two base fellows came in and sat opposite him; and the base fellows brought a charge against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king." So they took him outside the city, and stoned him to death with stones. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned; he is dead." As soon as Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead." And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

Reflection:
"In today’s reading, we witness a grave injustice as King Ahab covets Naboth’s vineyard and allows his wife Jezebel to orchestrate Naboth’s death through deceit and false accusation. Naboth’s refusal to surrender his ancestral inheritance symbolizes steadfast faith and integrity before God, even when faced with tyranny. This tragic act exposes how greed and misuse of power can lead to innocent bloodshed and divine displeasure. Jesus, in the GOSPEL, reverses the world’s logic of vengeance by commanding mercy and restraint: “Do not resist one who is evil.” He teaches that true strength lies in compassion, not retaliation; in yielding, not dominating. The Christian heart must rise above the instinct for revenge, reflecting God’s justice through gentleness and forgiveness. Like the psalmist who cries, “O Lord, give heed to my sighs,” we are reminded that God sees every act of injustice and hears the cry of the innocent. The way of Christ invites us to respond to wrongs not with violence or resentment, but with love that transforms hearts and restores peace. Jesus, I trust in you.*

Now therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my own possession among all peoples; for all the earth is mine, and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

2ND READING: Romans 5:6-11
Brethren: While we were yet helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man-though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die. But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we are now justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. At that time: When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest." And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every infirmity. The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out, charging them, "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And preach as you go, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.' Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying, give without pay.

"*In today’s reading, God reminds Israel at Mount Sinai of His tender care — how He carried them “on eagles’ wings” and brought them to Himself. He calls them His treasured possession and invites them into a covenant of holiness: to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. This divine call reveals both privilege and responsibility — to belong entirely to God and reflect His holiness in the world. St. Paul deepens this mystery by showing how God’s love reaches its fullness in Christ. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. His sacrifice turns enemies into friends, sinners into beloved children. Through His blood we are reconciled, and through His life we are saved — not by merit, but by mercy. In the GOSPEL, Jesus’ compassion moves Him to act. Seeing the crowds “like sheep without a shepherd,” He sends the Twelve to continue His mission — to heal, to cleanse, to proclaim that the Kingdom of God is near. The same call now reaches us: to be instruments of His mercy, bringing light where there is darkness, hope where there is despair, and healing where there is pain. May we hear God’s voice today as Israel did at Sinai, and respond with grateful obedience, remembering that we are His people — saved by grace, sent in love, and called to serve without expecting anything in return. Jesus, I trust in you.*

تحدث موسى إلى الشعب، قائلاً: "أنتم شعب مقدس للرب إلهكم؛ الرب إلهكم اختاركم لتكونوا شعبه الخاص، من بين جميع الشعوب التي على وجه الأرض. لم يكن ذلك لأنكم أكثر عدداً من أي شعب آخر، بل لأن الرب أحبكم، ويحفظ العهد الذي أقسمه لآبائكم، فقد أخرجكم الرب بيد قوية، وفداكم من بيت العبودية، من يد فرعون ملك مصر. اعلموا إذن أن الرب إلهكم هو الإله، الإله الأمين الذي يحفظ العهد والمحبة الرحيمة مع الذين يحبونه ويحفظون وصاياه، إلى ألف جيل، ويجزي وجهاً لوجه الذين يكرهون، بإهلاكهم؛ لن يكون رخواً مع من يكرهه، بل سيجزيه وجهاً لوجه. يجب عليكم إذن أن تكونوا حذرين لتعملوا بالوصية، والشرائع، والأحكام، التي أوصيتكم بها اليوم.

في تلك الأيام، آمن عدد كبير من الناس وتوجهوا إلى الرب. وصلت أخبار هذا إلى آذان الكنيسة في القدس، فأرسلوا برنابا إلى أنطاكية. وعندما جاء ورأى نعمة الله، كان سعيدًا؛ وشجعهم جميعًا على البقاء مخلصين للرب بعزم ثابت؛ لأنه كان رجلًا صالحًا، مليئًا بالروح القدس والإيمان. وأضيفت مجموعة كبيرة إلى الرب. لذا ذهب برنابا إلى طرسوس للبحث عن شاول؛ وعندما وجده، أحضره إلى أنطاكية. لمدة عام كامل، كانوا يجتمعون مع الكنيسة ويعلمون مجموعة كبيرة من الناس، وفي أنطاكية، دُعي التلاميذ لأول مرة بالمسيحيين. الآن في الكنيسة في أنطاكية، كان هناك أنبياء ومعلمون، برنابا، سمعان الذي دُعي نيجير، لوقا من قيرين، مانيان أحد أعضاء محكمة هيرودس، وشاول. بينما كانوا يعبدون الرب ويصومون، قال الروح القدس: "خصصوا لي برنابا وشاول للعمل الذي دعوتهما له." ثم، بعد الصيام والصلاة، وضعوا أيديهم عليهم وأرسلوهم.

في تلك الأيام: جف الجدول [حيث كان إيليا مختبئًا]، لأنه لم يكن هناك مطر في الأرض. ثم جاءت كلمة الرب إليه، "قم، اذهب إلى صرفة، التي تنتمي إلى صيدون، وأقم هناك. ها أنا قد أمرت أرملة هناك لتطعمك." فقام وذهب إلى صرفة؛ وعندما وصل إلى باب المدينة، كانت هناك أرملة تجمع الحطب؛ فنادها وقال، "أحضري لي قليلاً من الماء في إناء، لأشرب." وعندما كانت ذاهبة لإحضاره، ناداها وقال، "أحضري لي قطعة من الخبز في يدك." فقالت، "حيّ الرب إلهك، ليس لدي خبز مخبوز، فقط حفنة من الدقيق في جرة، وقليل من الزيت في إناء؛ والآن، أنا أجمع بعض الحطب، لأدخل وأعده لنفسي ولابني، لنأكله، ونموت." فقال إيليا لها، "لا تخافي؛ اذهبي وافعلي كما قلت؛ ولكن أولاً اصنعي لي كعكة صغيرة منها وأحضريها إلي، وبعد ذلك اصنعي لنفسك ولابنك. لأنه هكذا يقول الرب إله إسرائيل، 'لن ينفد الدقيق من الجرة، ولن يفشل الزيت من الإناء، حتى اليوم الذي يرسل فيه الرب المطر على الأرض.'" فذهبت وفعلت كما قال إيليا؛ وأكلت هي وهو وبيتها لعدة أيام. لم ينفد الدقيق من الجرة، ولم يفشل الزيت من الإناء، وفقًا لكلمة الرب التي تكلم بها على لسان إيليا.

في تلك الأيام: إليا التيشبي، من تيشبي في الجليل، قال لأحاب: "كما أن الرب إله إسرائيل حي، الذي أقف أمامه، لن يكون هناك ندى ولا مطر في هذه السنوات، إلا بكلمتي." وجاءت كلمة الرب إليه: "اخرج من هنا واذهب شرقًا، واختبئ عند الجدول كريث، الذي هو شرق الأردن. ستشرب من الجدول، وقد أمرت الغربان أن تطعمك هناك." فذهب وعمل حسب كلمة الرب؛ ذهب وسكن عند الجدول كريث الذي هو شرق الأردن. وكانت الغربان تأتي له بخبز ولحم في الصباح، وخبز ولحم في المساء؛ وكان يشرب من الجدول.

تحدث موسى إلى الشعب قائلاً: "عليكم أن تتذكروا كل الطريق الذي قادكم به الرب إلهكم هذه الأربعين سنة في البرية، ليبتليكم لتعرفوا ما في قلوبكم، هل ستلتزمون بوصاياه أم لا. وقد أذلّكم وجعل لكم الجوع وأطعمكم بالمن الذي لم تعرفوه، ولا عرفه آباؤكم؛ ليعلمكم أن الإنسان لا يعيش بالخبز وحده، بل بكل ما يخرج من فم الرب." "وعليكم أن تتذكروا الرب إلهكم الذي أخرجكم من أرض مصر، من بيت العبودية، الذي قادكم في البرية العظيمة والمخيفة، مع ثعابينها المحترقة والعقارب والأرض العطشى التي لا ماء فيها، الذي أخرج لكم ماءً من الصخر الصلد، الذي أطعمكم في البرية بالمن الذي لم يعرفه آباؤكم."

القراءة الأولى: 2 تيموثاوس 4:1-8
أحبائي: أُكلفكم في حضرة الله والمسيح يسوع الذي سيحكم الأحياء والأموات، ومن خلال ظهوره ومملكته: انشروا الكلمة، كونوا في حالة تأهب في كل الأوقات، اقنعوا، عاتبوا، وحثوا، كونوا ثابتين في الصبر والتعليم. لأنه يأتي وقت لن يتحمل فيه الناس التعليم الصحيح، بل سيتجمعون لأنفسهم معلمين يناسبون أذواقهم، وسيتحولون عن الاستماع إلى الحق ويتجولون في الأساطير. أما أنتم، فكونوا دائمين، تحملوا المعاناة، قوموا بعمل المبشر، وأكملوا خدمتك. لأني قد اقتربت من أن أُقدّم كذبيحة؛ قد حان وقت رحيلي. لقد خضت القتال الجيد، أنهيت السباق، حافظت على الإيمان. ومن الآن فصاعدًا، هناك إكليل للبر محفوظ لي، الذي سيمنحني إياه الرب، القاضي العادل، في ذلك اليوم، وليس لي وحدي، بل أيضًا لكل الذين أحبوا ظهوره.
