Europe’s imperative to de-dollarise in a world of erratic US ‘leadership’

The dollar is the key currency in the international monetary system and plays an enormous role in the European financial system. In times of crisis, Europe has benefited from the Federal Reserve’s interventions to stabilise the system in times of financial distress. However, mounting political pressure from Trump’s administration on the Federal Reserve puts this role into question, which poses serious risks to European financial stability.

The role of the dollar in the international monetary system

The European Central Bank (ECB) has recently published its annual report on the international role of the euro. It comes as no surprise that the dollar keeps its role as the key-currency of the world economy, and the euro appears as the second most important currency. Yet, for those not familiar with these discussions, it is important to highlight the huge gap between the international relevance of these two currencies. The US dollar is used for nothing less than 88% of the operations in the foreign exchange market, the euro coming at a distant second place at 31% (Figure 1).

When it comes to international reserves, the share of the US dollar has declined over the last decade but still stands at 58%, while the euro accounts for 20%. In the case of international debt securities, roughly two-thirds are denominated in US dollars and one-fifth in euros. More than half of world trade is invoiced in US dollars.

The dominance of the dollar is therefore unambiguous, and one cannot underestimate the consequences for the world economy. On the one hand, the reliance on a key-currency undoubtedly facilitates international transactions, and provides an anchor for global financial wealth.

US Dollar Index rebounds toward 98.00 ahead of Producer Price Index data

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the value of the US Dollar (USD) against six major currencies, is trading around 97.80 during the early European hours on Thursday after recovering daily losses. Traders will likely observe the US Producer Price Index (PPI) data, followed by the weekly Initial Jobless Claims due later in the North American session.

Dollar in doldrums as Fed rate-cut bets build; bitcoin soars to record high:

The dollar index, which measures the currency against the euro, sterling and four other major peers, was steady at 97.704 as of 0002 GMT. It dropped some 0.8% over the previous two sessions, having dipped to 97.626 on Wednesday for the first time since July 28.

The euro edged up to $1.1713, nearing Wednesday's high of $1.1730, a level last seen on July 28.

Sterling rose to $1.3586 for the first time since July 24.

Against Japan's currency, the greenback lost 0.3% to 146.95 yen.

Fed rhetoric has turned overall more dovish of late, amid signs of a cooling labour market and with President Donald Trump's tariffs not adding to price pressures in a significant way as of yet.
