The UK is deploying a Royal Navy destroyer to the Middle East as part of a potential multinational mission to safeguard commercial shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, amid renewed tensions that threaten a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran. $MITO

The British Ministry of Defence stated that HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer currently in the eastern Mediterranean, will be pre-positioned to support a maritime security operation jointly led by the UK and France, as soon as conditions allow for safe passage through this strategically critical waterway. $INX

"The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of a prudent strategy that will ensure the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition co-led by the UK and France, to secure the Strait when conditions allow," stated a spokesperson from the British Ministry of Defence.

The movement comes as Washington awaits Tehran's response to a new ceasefire proposal, following new clashes near Hormuz that have shaken an already fragile diplomacy. $SAHARA

American authorities stated that Iranian and American forces exchanged gunfire near the Strait this week, while the United States accused Tehran of disrupting maritime traffic and attacking infrastructure in the Gulf.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the US expected an Iranian response "imminently," although both sides have accused each other of violating the truce declared last month.

The Strait of Hormuz accounts for approximately one-fifth of global oil trade, and ongoing disruptions have heightened fears of prolonged supply shocks and increased military escalation in the Gulf.
