Iran’s new maritime protocol shows that they are not going to give up control over the Strait of Hormuz without a “fight”, Emma Salisbury, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.
“Iran knows that control of the strait is its big point of leverage because it does have this huge effect on the global economy and oil, fertiliser, gas and all of the things that we all need,” she said.
She explained that if Iran implements the tolls it has suggested, any ship that pays will “fall foul” of the sanctions that are in place against Iran.
“This is a huge commercial risk.”
There are still “considerable risks” from Iran itself, including attacks from sea mines and missiles, although she added that under naval protection there may be “less of a risk”.
