Rejecting 'false prosperity': How many true believers can OpenLedger retain when the tide goes out?
A few years ago, I had a buddy, DaPeng, who started his own GameFi chain game. During the beta phase, it was absolutely buzzing, daily active users shot past ten thousand, and DaPeng was feeling himself, thinking he was totally set. But what happened? Once the official version dropped, the gold earning mechanics were adjusted, and 90% of the players vanished overnight. DaPeng later chuckled bitterly and complained to me: 'These folks aren’t here to experience the product; they’re all just here to farm free rewards.'
Having witnessed DaPeng's experience, I now look at various Web3 project testnet data with a skeptical eye, automatically cutting the figures in half.
However, upon closer inspection, OpenLedger really does have some solid mechanics, making me relatively optimistic about its mainnet retention rate:
• Meaningful 'no-loss migration': Many projects wipe their testnet data clean when the mainnet launches, leaving everyone’s efforts in vain. But OpenLedger’s design allows you to seamlessly transfer your contributions and attribution records from the testnet to the mainnet. This means early participants don’t have to start from scratch; the energy they expended upfront translates directly into tangible 'identity assets' on the mainnet.
• Real 'bridge' incentives: The project has set aside a portion of the rewards pool in $OPEN tokens specifically for early contributors to the mainnet. This effectively ties the 'migrating to the mainnet' process to real profit-driven incentives, ensuring that the enthusiasm from the testnet transitions smoothly to the mainnet—a sturdier bridge than many competing products.
Just like DaPeng later had a reality check and stopped chasing inflated daily active users, focusing instead on serving the few hundred loyal fans truly willing to root themselves in the ecosystem. OpenLedger will face the same test this coming year. Once the early farming bubble bursts, come early 2027, we’ll see just how many genuine core builders it has retained—that's when the real value will be revealed.
