1. LESUNG: Apostelgeschichte 4:13-21

In jenen Tagen: Als die Herrscher und Ältesten und Schriftgelehrten die Freimütigkeit von Peter und Johannes sahen und wahrnahmen, dass sie ungebildete, gewöhnliche Männer waren, wunderten sie sich; und sie erkannten, dass sie mit Jesus gewesen waren. Aber als sie den geheilten Mann sahen, der neben ihnen stand, hatten sie nichts zu sagen, um sich zu widersetzen. Als sie sie jedoch befahlen, aus dem Rat zu gehen, berieten sie sich miteinander und sagten: "Was sollen wir mit diesen Menschen tun? Denn ein bemerkenswertes Zeichen ist durch sie geschehen, das allen Einwohnern von Jerusalem offensichtlich ist, und wir können es nicht leugnen. Damit es sich jedoch nicht weiter unter dem Volk ausbreitet, lasst uns sie warnen, nicht mehr mit jemandem in diesem Namen zu sprechen." So riefen sie sie und befahlen ihnen, in dem Namen von Jesus überhaupt nicht zu sprechen oder zu lehren. Aber Peter und Johannes antworteten ihnen: "Ob es recht ist in den Augen Gottes, auf euch zu hören statt auf Gott, müsst ihr urteilen; denn wir können nicht anders, als von dem zu reden, was wir gesehen und gehört haben." Und als sie sie weiter bedrohten, ließen sie sie gehen, da sie keinen Weg fanden, sie zu bestrafen, wegen des Volkes; denn alle Menschen lobten Gott für das, was geschehen war.

In those days: As Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in  Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they arrested them and put them in custody until the morrow, for it was already evening. But many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to about five thousand. On the morrow, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do this?" Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of  Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but which has become the head of the corner. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."

GOSPEL John 21:1-14

At that time:  Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will go with you." They went out and got into the boat; but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking,  Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was  Jesus.  Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any fish?" They answered him, "No." He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, for the quantity of fish. That disciple whom  Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the  Lord!" When Simon Peter heard that it was the  Lord, he put on his clothes, for he was stripped for work, and sprang into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish lying on it, and bread.  Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught." So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn.  Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." Now none of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the  Lord.  Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Reflection:

Human effort is vain where grace does not abide. Where grace abides, human effort is fruitful. Never embark on any mission without first seeking God's grace. If you do, your efforts and strength will yield no result. To set out without grace is to have failed even before setting out. Many today are tired and exhausted, as their work all day and night has yielded nothing, like the apostles in today's GOSPEL. They are depressed and frustrated. Some have even taken their lives, while others are on the verge of that. That is how bad it can be to set out without the Master of all things.  Jesus is the password to nature and the world. Once He comes into your dealings, be sure they will yield an extraordinary result. Call upon Him and you will not rue your life any more. Jesus, I trust in you.

1ST READING: Acts 3:1-10

In those days: Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at that gate of the temple which is called Beautiful to ask alms of those who entered the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, with John, and said, "Look at us." And he fixed his attention upon them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, "I have no silver and gold, but I give you what I have; in the name of  Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." And he took him by the right hand and raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up he stood and walked and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God, and recognized him as the one who sat for alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

GOSPEL Luke 24:13-35

That very day, [the first day of the week,] two of the disciples of  Jesus were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together,  Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What is this conversation which you are holding with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?" And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "Concerning  Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since this happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his body; and they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb, and found it just as the women had said; but him they did not see." And he said to them, "o foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He appeared to be going further, but they constrained him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognized him; and he vanished out of their sight. They said to each other, "Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?" And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven gathered together and those who were with them, who said, "The  Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!" Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

The Gospel of The Lord!

Reflection:

The breaking of the bread restores the sight of the two Emmaus disciples who are blinded by preconceived ideas. Like many today, they want a wealthy, prosperous Messiah, with no pain, no suffering and no death. They are scandalised and disappointed by the death of  Jesus. Hope is lost. The One they thought would deliver them from their physical oppressors has Himself been oppressed and killed. The death of  Jesus has blinded the sight they thought they had. Now they are left without sight. This is the fate of many Christians today, who become Christians hoping their lives will no more be with problems or suffering. But it seems that with Christianity come more problems, and now they are lost. Dear friends, dare to hold firm, the breaking of bread gave sight to the blind disciples.  Jesus will restore your fortunes in His own time and in His own way. Do not give up. Jesus, I trust in you.

[On the day of Pentecost,] Peter, standing with the Eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. " Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know-- this  Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him, 'I saw the  Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken; therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover my flesh will dwell in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor let your Holy One see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence. "Brethren, I may say to you confidently of the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne, he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This  Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear.

At that time: The women departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold,  Jesus met them and said, "Hail!" And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshipped him. Then  Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see me." While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sum of money to the soldiers and said, "Tell people, 'His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.' And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." So they took the money and did as they were directed; and this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

Reflection:

God's writings cannot be rewritten by any human being. His ways and works are far above ours. While humans look for outstanding persons to accomplish great things, God seeks the weak and makes use of them, as evident in today's GOSPEL. The women are sent by  Jesus to spread the good tidings of His resurrection and, instead of welcoming it, the soldiers are ordered by the chief priests and the Jewish authorities to disprove their testimony. In a culture that has little or no regard for women,  Jesus chooses to use them as first preachers of this greatest miracle of His resurrection. Despite the bribe the soldiers receive they cannot silence the voices of these women who freely receive the truth and freely offer it. They bear witness to the truth and their bravery has collapsed many empires and thrones. Truth travels through ages and continents and still continues. Nothing can obstruct the works of God.  Lord, help us to be promoters of Your Word. Jesus, I trust in you.

Am Anfang schuf Gott die Himmel und die Erde. Die Erde war wüst und leer, und Finsternis lag auf der Tiefe; und der Geist Gottes schwebte über dem Wasser. Und Gott sprach: "Es werde Licht!"; und es wurde Licht. Und Gott sah, dass das Licht gut war; und Gott schied das Licht von der Finsternis. Gott nannte das Licht Tag, und die Finsternis nannte er Nacht. Und es wurde Abend und es wurde Morgen, ein Tag. Und Gott sprach: "Es werde eine Feste inmitten der Wasser, und es scheide die Wasser von den Wassern." Und Gott machte die Feste und schied die Wasser, die unter der Feste waren, von den Wassern, die über der Feste waren. Und es war so. Und Gott nannte die Feste Himmel. Und Gott sprach: "Die Wasser sollen Schwärme lebender Wesen hervorbringen, und Vögel sollen über der Erde fliegen, über der Feste des Himmels." So schuf Gott die großen Seeungeheuer und alle lebenden Wesen, die sich bewegen, mit denen die Wasser wimmeln, jede nach ihrer Art, und jeden geflügelten Vogel nach seiner Art. Und Gott sah, dass es gut war. Und Gott segnete sie und sprach: "Seid fruchtbar und mehret euch und füllt die Wasser in den Meeren, und die Vögel sollen sich auf der Erde vermehren." Und es wurde Abend und es wurde Morgen, ein fünfter Tag. Und Gott sprach: "Die Erde lasse lebende Wesen hervorbringen, jede nach ihrer Art: Vieh und Gewürme und Tiere der Erde nach ihrer Art." Und es war so. Und Gott machte die Tiere der Erde nach ihrer Art und das Vieh nach seiner Art und alles, was sich auf dem Boden regt, nach seiner Art. Und Gott sah, dass es gut war. Dann sprach Gott: "Lasst uns Menschen machen in unserem Bild, nach unserem Gleichnis; und sie sollen herrschen über die Fische des Meeres und über die Vögel des Himmels und über das Vieh und über die ganze Erde und über alles Gewürm, das sich auf der Erde regt." So schuf Gott den Menschen in seinem eigenen Bild, im Bild Gottes schuf er ihn; männlich und weiblich schuf er sie. Und Gott segnete sie und sprach zu ihnen: "Seid fruchtbar und mehret euch und füllt die Erde und unterwerft sie; und herrscht über die Fische des Meeres und über die Vögel des Himmels und über alles lebende Wesen, das sich auf der Erde regt." Und Gott sprach: "Siehe, ich habe euch jedes Kraut gegeben, das Samen trägt, das auf der ganzen Erde ist, und jeden Baum, der Früchte hat, in denen ihr Same ist; ihr sollt sie zur Nahrung haben. Und zu jedem Tier der Erde und zu jedem Vogel des Himmels und zu allem, was sich auf der Erde regt, allem, was den Lebensatem hat, habe ich jedes grüne Kraut zur Nahrung gegeben." Und es war so. Und Gott sah alles, was er gemacht hatte, und siehe, es war sehr gut. Und es wurde Abend und es wurde Morgen, ein sechster Tag. So wurden die Himmel und die Erde vollendet und all ihr Heer. Und am siebten Tag vollendete Gott seine Arbeit, die er gemacht hatte, und er ruhte am siebten Tag von all seiner Arbeit, die er gemacht hatte.

1. LESUNG: Jesaja 52:13-53:12

Siehe, mein Diener wird gedeihen, er wird erhöht und emporgehoben und wird sehr hoch sein. Wie viele über ihn erstaunt waren - seine Gestalt war so entstellt, über das menschliche Aussehen hinaus, und sein Aussehen über das der Menschenkinder hinaus - so wird er viele Nationen erstaunen; Könige werden vor ihm den Mund schließen; denn was ihnen nicht erzählt worden ist, werden sie sehen, und was sie nicht gehört haben, werden sie verstehen. Wer hat geglaubt, was wir gehört haben? Und wem ist der Arm des Herrn offenbart worden? Denn er wuchs vor ihm auf wie ein junger Spross und wie eine Wurzel aus trockenem Boden; er hatte keine Gestalt oder Ansehen, dass wir ihn ansehen sollten, und keine Schönheit, dass wir ihn begehrt hätten. Some thought that, because Judas had the money box,  Jesus was telling him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. Reflection:

Today's GOSPEL appears to be the saddest of all; two close friends of  Jesus betray and deny Him. Judas, full of self and greed, is blind to the love and affection shown to him by  Jesus. Till the last moment, Jesus extends His hands of love to him. Instead, Judas prefers to betray  Jesus for money. Peter, too, wants the crown without the cross, glory without gall, throne without thorns, and for that he denies the One for whom he bragged he would lay down his life! We sometimes betray Him when we are full of ourselves and deny Him when our Christianity is all about prosperity and worldly glory. Jesus, I trust in you.

GOSPEL John 12:1-11

Six days before the Passover,  Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom  Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of  Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said, "Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, "Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me." When the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in  Jesus.

Reflection:

True love gives everything. It never calculates the cost and seeks nothing for itself in return. This is what we see in today's GOSPEL. Mary spends her most valuable possession on  Jesus. Anointing His feet with an expensive perfume, she uses her hair to wipe them. A rare gesture that hardly any woman will do today, knowing the value they attach to their hair! Such an expression of love is what  Jesus expects from us too. And it is the same kind of love that He expresses as He willingly endures the scourging, crowning with thorns, and ultimately crucifixion on the cross. He forgets Himself in loving humanity. May we too love You,  Lord, above all things! Jesus, I trust in you.

When Martha heard that  Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the house. Martha said to  Jesus, " Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you."  Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."  Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes,  Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world."  Jesus, therefore, was deeply moved in spirit and troubled; and he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, " Lord, come and see."  Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then  Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.  Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, " Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days."  Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And  Jesus lifted his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you hear me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that you have sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth.  Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him.

The Gospel passage for this fifth Sunday of Lent is the resurrection of Lazarus (…). Jesus could have avoided the death of his friend Lazarus, but he wanted to share in our suffering for the death of people dear to us, and above all, he wished to demonstrate God’s dominion over death. In this Gospel passage, we see that the faith of man and the omnipotence of God, of God’s love, seek each other and finally meet. It is like a two-lane street: the faith of man and the omnipotence of God’s love seek each other and finally meet. We see this in the cry of Martha and Mary, and of all of us with them: “If you had been here!”. And God’s answer is not a speech, no, God’s answer to the problem of death is Jesus: “I am the resurrection and the life” ... have faith. Amid grief, continue to have faith, even when it seems that death has won. Take away the stone from your heart! Let the Word of God restore life where there is death. Today, too, Jesus repeats to us: “Take away the stone”. (…) Christ lives, and those who welcome him and follow him come into contact with life. Jesus, I trust in you.
