Circle and Stripe are developing payment platforms that allow artificial intelligence agents to conduct transactions using crypto.. What's the story?

Cryptocurrency companies are heading towards building a new financial infrastructure tailored for the artificial intelligence economy. Circle Internet Group and Stripe are working on developing payment platforms that allow independent artificial intelligence agents to conduct financial transactions using cryptocurrencies.

The idea is to replace traditional payment methods that rely on humans, such as credit cards or bank transfers, with automated payment systems based on blockchain technology, enabling software or artificial intelligence agents to send payments and execute transactions directly and instantly without human intervention.

Jeremy Allaire, the CEO of Circle, believes that cryptocurrencies could become the foundational financial infrastructure for a machine-led economy, where billions of artificial intelligence agents can continuously conduct economic activity. He thinks these systems will need a fast and programmable means of payment like cryptocurrencies, which could make it the primary currency for trade between machines in the future.
Payment companies have already started developing tools for what is known as "Agentic Commerce," which allows intelligent systems to automatically purchase services or pay fees for using programming interfaces and applications through small payments.
