Priest & Confessor

Born Giovanni Battista de Rossi on 22 February 1698 in Voltaggio, Italy. Despite fragile health from childhood, he was ordained a priest in 1721. He dedicated his life to the care of the sick, the poor, and the marginalized in Rome, especially those in hospitals and prisons. He founded a confraternity to assist the sick poor and spent countless hours hearing confessions, preaching, and visiting the suffering. Known for his gentle patience, deep prayer life, and extraordinary charity, he often exhausted himself in service while offering his own chronic illnesses in reparation. He died on 23 May 1764 in Rome. Canonized in 1881 by Pope Leo XIII. Patron of Voltaggio and invoked for the sick and those in hospitals.

Religious, Widow & Mystic (Optional Memorial)

Born Margherita Lotti in 1381 in Roccaporena, Italy. Married at a young age to a violent husband, she endured an abusive marriage for 18 years while raising two sons and working for peace in her family and community. After her husband’s violent death and the tragic loss of her sons, she entered the Augustinian convent at Cascia as a widow. There she lived a life of intense prayer, severe penance, and charity. She received the stigmata in the form of a thorn from Christ’s crown embedded in her forehead, which caused her great suffering. Famous for many miracles during and after her life, she is especially invoked as the Patroness of Impossible Causes, difficult marriages, and hopeless situations. Died on 22 May 1457. Canonized in 1900 by Pope Leo XIII.

21 May – St. Christopher Magallanes and Companions
Mexican Priests & Lay Martyrs of the Cristero War

Born Cristóbal Magallanes Jara on 30 July 1869 in Totatiche, Jalisco, Mexico. A humble, zealous diocesan priest who served the poor, founded schools, promoted devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe, and defended the faith during the fierce anti-Catholic persecution under the Mexican government. Despite a government ban on public worship, he continued secretly celebrating Mass, administering sacraments, and supporting the Cristero rebels spiritually (though he did not take up arms). Arrested on 21 May 1927 while heading to celebrate a feast, he was executed by firing squad the next day without trial, forgiving his killers and crying “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (“Long live Christ the King!”). Along with him, 24 other priests and 3 laymen (collectively known as the Martyrs of the Mexican Revolution) were martyred between 1915–1937 for their fidelity to the Church. Canonized together by Pope John Paul II on 21 May 2000.

Born Bernardine Albizzeschi on 8 September 1380 in Massa Marittima, Tuscany, Italy, into a noble family. Orphaned young, he was raised by devout aunts. At 22 he joined the Observant Franciscans. After recovering from a severe illness, he became one of the greatest preachers of the 15th century, travelling across Italy for decades. He revived faith through powerful sermons against usury, factionalism, and immorality, often ending with the monogram IHS (Jesus) displayed on a tablet for public veneration. This spread the devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus across Europe. He also promoted peace and moral reform, famously inspiring “bonfires of the vanities.” Elected Vicar General of the Observants, he declined bishoprics three times to remain a simple friar. He died on 20 May 1444 in L’Aquila. Canonized in 1450 by Pope Nicholas V. Patron of advertisers, public relations, communicators, gamblers, and chest/lung problems.

Hermit, Monk & Reluctant Pope (Peter of Morrone)

Born Pietro Angelerio (or del Morrone) around 1215 in Isernia, Italy, into a poor family. From his youth he lived as a hermit in the Abruzzi mountains, embracing strict asceticism and contemplative prayer. He founded the Celestines, a strict branch of the Benedictines. Renowned for holiness and miracles, he was elected Pope in 1294 at nearly 80 years old after a two-year vacancy — the last non-conclave papal election. Overwhelmed by the burdens of office and political intrigue, he abdicated after only five months, becoming the first pope in history to resign voluntarily. He sought to return to his hermit life but was imprisoned by his successor Boniface VIII and died in captivity on 19 May 1296. Canonized in 1313 by Pope Clement V. Patron of bookbinders.

Pope & Martyr

Born in Tuscany, Italy, in the late 5th century. Elected Pope in 523 while still an archdeacon. During his short pontificate (523–526), he faced the delicate political situation under the Arian Ostrogothic King Theodoric the Great in Italy. Sent as head of a delegation to Constantinople by Theodoric to negotiate with Emperor Justin I regarding the treatment of Arians, he successfully reconciled the Eastern and Western Churches (ending the Acacian Schism) and obtained some relief for the Arians. Upon his return to Ravenna, Theodoric — growing increasingly suspicious — had him arrested and imprisoned under harsh conditions. Worn out by the journey and maltreatment, Pope St. John I died in prison on 18 May 526. Venerated as a martyr for his fidelity amid political intrigue. Buried in St. Peter’s Basilica.

From childhood he worked as a shepherd, spending long hours in the fields in prayer and contemplation. At age 24 he entered the Franciscan Order as a lay brother at the convent of El Monte in Valencia. Known for his profound devotion to the Blessed Sacrament — he would spend hours in adoration even after his duties — he was granted many ecstasies and visions during Mass. He lived a life of extreme austerity, humility, and joyful obedience, often serving as cook, porter, or beggar for the community. Famous for his miracles and for converting heretics through his gentle witness and Eucharistic love. He died on 17 May 1592 while contemplating the Eucharist. Canonized in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII. Patron of Eucharistic Congresses and Associations, cooks, shepherds, and the city of Valencia.

16 May – St. Simon Stock
Carmelite Prior General & Confessor

Born c. 1165 in Aylesford, Kent, England. He lived as a hermit in a hollow oak tree (hence “Stock”) for many years before joining the Carmelite Order when they arrived in England. He became a leader of the English Carmelites and was elected Prior General of the entire Order around 1247. During a time of great difficulty for the young mendicant order, he prayed fervently to Our Lady for help. On 16 July 1251, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him holding the Brown Scapular and said: “Receive, my beloved son, this scapular of thy Order; it is a sign of my protection. Whoever dies wearing it shall be saved.” This vision greatly strengthened the Carmelites and spread the devotion of the Scapular throughout the Church. He worked tirelessly to establish Carmelite houses across Europe and died peacefully on 16 May 1265 in Bordeaux, France. Patron of the Carmelite Order and invoked especially in devotion to the Brown Scapular.

Confessor & Patron of Farmers (Optional Memorial)

Born c. 1070–1080 near Madrid, Spain, to a poor but devout family. From childhood he worked as a day laborer on the estate of a wealthy landowner near Madrid. Married to the equally holy St. Maria de la Cabeza (Toribia), he and his wife lived in great simplicity and mutual chastity. Isidore attended daily Mass before work, spent time in prayer while plowing, and was known for his generosity to the poor — often sharing his own food with beggars and birds. Miraculous stories surround him: angels were seen plowing the fields for him when he was late due to prayer; a spring of water appeared at his prayer during a drought; and his grain multiplied to feed the hungry. He died on 15 May 1130. Canonized in 1622 together with St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Francis Xavier, St. Teresa of Ávila, and St. Philip Neri. Patron of farmers, laborers, Madrid, and many rural communities.

Apostle & Martyr

The apostle chosen to replace Judas Iscariot after the Ascension of the Lord. A faithful disciple of Jesus from the very beginning of His public ministry (having witnessed His baptism by John and all His works up to the Ascension), he was selected by lot after the apostles prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:15-26). Matthias was numbered among the Twelve and received the same mission to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Ancient tradition holds that he preached in Judea, Cappadocia, and along the shores of the Black Sea, and was martyred by crucifixion or stoning in Jerusalem or Ethiopia. Little is known of his life, yet his quiet fidelity earned him a place among the foundational pillars of the Church.

13 May – Our Lady of Fatima
(Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

On 13 May 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children — Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto — in the Cova da Iria near Fatima, Portugal. Over six months she appeared on the 13th of each month (except August), revealing the three secrets of Fatima, including a vision of hell, the prediction of World War II, and the need for the consecration of Russia. 12 May – Saints Nereus and Achilleus
Martyrs

Two early Roman Christian soldiers (eunuchs according to tradition) who served in the household of Flavia Domitilla, a Christian noblewoman and niece of Emperor Domitian. Converted to the faith, they refused to participate in pagan sacrifices and were exiled along with Domitilla to the island of Ponza. Later brought back to Rome, they were beheaded for their steadfast confession of Christ around the year 304 during the Diocletian persecution (or earlier under Domitian). Their relics were venerated in the Catacomb of Domitilla on the Via Ardeatina, where Pope Damasus I later built a basilica in their honor. They are often celebrated together with St. Pancras on this day. Patrons of soldiers who convert to the faith.
