A crowdfunding project called The DAO got hacked, with over 3 million ETH stolen.
Vitalik and the community were in a heated debate. Some argued for rolling back the transactions, while others insisted that immutability was the core principle.
In the end, Vitalik made the call: rollback.
On July 20, 2016, Ethereum executed a hard fork.
But a group of people refused the fork and stuck with the original chain. That's today's Ethereum Classic (ETC).
This fork taught the crypto world a lesson: blockchain's immutability ultimately depends on people.
