Bitcoin turns 17 today 💯🚀
On January 3, 2009 at 18:15:05 UTC, Satoshi mined the Genesis Block. This is the first verifiable entry in Bitcoin’s ledger.
Today, January 3, 2026, the system is 17 years old.
What makes this date special:
➡️ The Genesis Block contains a hidden headline from The Times dated January 3, 2009:
“Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.”
It proved the block was not pre-mined and framed Bitcoin as a response to the financial system of that moment.
➡️ After the Genesis Block, the network went silent for 6 days.
Block 1 was mined only on January 9, 2009.
Many believe this pause was intentional, setting a clean starting rhythm for the system.
➡️ The 50 BTC reward from the Genesis Block can never be spent.
Because of how the block was hardcoded, those coins are permanently unmovable.
The address still receives small tribute transactions to this day.
➡️ The Genesis Block was written into the software by hand.
Every other block is produced by the protocol.
This one exists so the chain has a fixed point of origin.
