Researcher scores a 1 bitcoin bounty for the 'biggest quantum attack' on the underlying tech
Independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli cracked a 15-bit elliptic curve key using publicly accessible quantum hardware, 512 times larger than the previous public demo back in September 2025. An independent researcher leveraged public quantum hardware to break a 15-bit elliptic curve key, earning the Q-Day Prize of 1 bitcoin from Project Eleven in the largest public demonstration to date of a quantum attack relevant to cryptocurrencies.
While this feat is far from threatening the security of bitcoin's 256-bit elliptic curve, it shows that practical quantum attacks on real cryptographic systems are advancing rapidly, with resource estimates for a full 256-bit break dropping below 500,000 physical qubits.
This breakthrough is heightening concerns over the roughly 6.9 million bitcoins in addresses with exposed public keys and adding urgency to post-quantum migration plans, like Bitcoin's BIP-360 proposal and similar efforts from Ethereum, Tron, StarkWare, and Ripple. The quantum attack that Bitcoin has been treating as a tomorrow problem just got a bit less theoretical.
The quantum security startup Project Eleven reported that it awarded its Q-Day Prize of 1 bitcoin $BTC to independent researcher Giancarlo Lelli on Friday after he broke a 15-bit elliptic curve key using publicly accessible quantum hardware, deriving a private encryption key from its public counterpart. Lelli's outcome doesn't mean that bitcoin is on the verge of being compromised. Bitcoin employs 256-bit elliptic curve security.
