Circle, the company behind USDC, has agreed to acquire Interop Labs, the original development team behind the Axelar network. However, the deal does not include Axelar itself, its foundation, or the AXL token, all of which will continue operating independently.
Under the new setup, Common Prefix, a long-time Axelar contributor, will take over as the network’s lead developer.
What Circle Is Actually Buying
Circle is bringing Interop Labs’ team and proprietary technology in-house to speed up development of its Arc blockchain and Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP). The acquisition is expected to close in early 2026.
Circle’s CTO, Nikhil Chandhok, said the move is aimed at making blockchain connectivity easier and positioning Circle as a central hub for multichain finance.
Both Circle and Interop Labs were clear that Axelar remains separate. The network will stay community-governed, open-source, and independent, even as the original team transitions to Circle.
