KelpDAO was hacked, not just a single protocol incident, but more like a stress test on the compositional risks of DeFi.

On April 18, KelpDAO's rsETH cross-chain bridge was attacked, and the attackers exploited vulnerabilities related to LayerZero to mint 116,500 fake rsETH, resulting in a loss of approximately $292 million. What is truly worth studying is not just the loss figures themselves, but how this incident quickly spilled over into three areas: lending, liquidity, and market sentiment. Aave's TVL significantly declined in a single day, large whales withdrew funds leading to tightened liquidity, and borrowing costs rose simultaneously, prompting SparkLend, Fluid, Compound, and Lido to take countermeasures.

Such incidents once again illustrate that LST, re-staking, cross-chain bridges, and lending protocols have formed a highly coupled system. On the surface, it appears that KelpDAO was attacked, but in reality, it exposes that as the composability of assets in DeFi continues to enhance, risks are also amplified and transmitted along the same path. Once the credibility of core collateral assets is compromised, the impact will quickly escalate from a single point security issue to a systemic liquidity problem.

For the market, there are three things to watch in the future: first, the disposal of fake rsETH and the pace of bad debt digestion; second, whether mainstream lending protocols like Aave will further adjust risk control parameters; third, whether the market will reprice re-staking and cross-chain assets. If any of these three points continue to deteriorate, the main narrative of DeFi this year may shift from yield enhancement back to risk repricing.
