According to the latest data from Bloomberg, the 30-day moving average of coal-fired electricity generation on Japan's main islands rose 17% on Tuesday compared to last year and has remained steadily high since the end of March. While natural gas generation has fallen 10% in the meantime, coal-fired power plants are running at higher speeds to compensate for the gas shortage. The Japanese government responded quickly, temporarily lifting operating restrictions on less efficient coal-fired units for a full year in March 2026, allowing them to be used more fully and saving hundreds of millions of cubic meters of LNG.

The move exposes Japan’s deep dependence on imported energy and shows how quickly priorities can shift when LNG prices soar due to war. Coal, which was recently seen as a savior, is once again emerging as a lifeline—even at the cost of higher emissions. Japan is reminding the rest of Asia that there is no room for illusions in the global energy game: security of supply remains paramount.
