Ethereum Foundation cuts 20% of staff, sets 40% budget cuts this week
According to announcements from the Ethereum Foundation, this week the EF announced layoffs of 20%, along with a reorganization centered around five "clusters"—the protocol layer, access layer, user layer, community layer, and institutional layer. In the same week, Vitalik Buterin said budget cuts would be 40%.
Meanwhile, ETHLabs has been established as a new nonprofit R&D organization, aiming to promote the adoption of Ethereum and to protect DeFi—while the EF has indicated that this responsibility is no longer a priority for it. The move has been welcomed by the community; observers noted that former EF talent has moved to the new organization.
Waymo and Uber end their Phoenix Robotaxi pilot, shifting vehicles to DoorDash delivery
According to CNBC and statements from the two companies, starting from June 30, Monday, the Uber app in Phoenix, Arizona, will no longer offer Waymo autonomous taxi services. The pilot deployed a dozen or so vehicles and was an intentionally limited rollout, helping provide a reference for Waymo’s expansion into other markets.
The autonomous vehicles in the Phoenix pilot will continue operating in the city, switching to autonomous deliveries via DoorDash (which competes with Uber Eats). Waymo operates an autonomous fleet of around 4,000 vehicles in the U.S., and has reached exclusive partnerships with Uber in Austin and Atlanta, with several hundred vehicles available in each location.
